As we celebrated our graduating students in 2023, we took a look back at the traditions and ceremony of the graduating class of 1923.

Before there was a Spring Fling, graduating students made their own fun around campus and at nearby scenic spots. Students enjoyed dancing along the railroad bridge and tree climbing was a common outdoor activity. They also liked to take a short walk to Craig's Ledge to admire the views and enjoy a picnic lunch.
Going for a swim in the Sandy River or at Clearwater Pond was also popular with students many years ago. These bathing costumes were traditional in the 1920s. Although a few daring students preferred to skinny dip!
Class Day at Clearwater Pond
Spending a day in May at Clearwater Pond was an annual tradition for graduating students for decades.
Students waded in the water, went swimming, took a boat out on the lake, and enjoyed a picnic lunch.
Arbor Day and Graduation
Each year the college's Arbor Day celebration included a procession of graduating students. Women wore white dresses and men dressed in their best suit and tie. The event also included musical performances and poetry recitations.
The class ode was another tradition. A member of the graduating class was selected to write a brief poem to be read at the ceremony. Adria N. Bradeen penned the ode for the Class of 1923. Although she graduated from the General Course in 1917, she returned to complete the Advanced Course in Home Economics and graduated again in 1923.
To F.S.N.S.
We hail the good old school days
In winter, spring or fall!
The happiest days together
At dear old Merrill Hall!
The mem’ries like sunshine,
Though cloudy sky appears,
Shall brighten all Life’s journey,
Because of these short years!
They will not be forgotten
As years go fleeting past,
The love for F.S.N.S.
Will always hold us fast.
— Adria Nettie Bradeen, 23
